The Department of Engineering Science is one of five departments in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Auckland. It teaches undergraduate degrees in Engineering Science and Biomedical Engineering, and graduate degrees in Engineering Science. A common theme in all our teaching is sophisticated problem solving using mathematical modelling and computation, based on a good understanding of fundamentals.
The Department has a long-standing reputation for excellence in research across many topics in Operations Research, Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics and Bioengineering. The Bioengineering group has been particularly successful and has now formed the Auckland Bioengineering Institute.
The themes of understanding fundamentals, mathematical modelling and computation are also followed worldwide in other Engineering Science Departments, for example, at Oxford, Toronto and Singapore.
The particular problem solving skills of our alumni have found application in a wide range of careers, spanning research and development, consulting engineering, business and finance, logistics, software engineering and academia.
